The Story
The way we navigate the sea can teach us something about the way we navigate life.
The idea behind Wind & Within grew from Philippe D’Astous’s years on the water—as a sailor, teacher, and lifelong student of the sea.
Some of life’s most meaningful discoveries happen when we step away from the demands of everyday life and create space to see things differently.
What began as lessons in navigation became a different way of thinking about how we navigate life itself.
The sea is the setting.
The journey is within.
More Than a Sailing Retreat
Make Way
The Philosophy Behind Wind & Within
In sailing, to make way means to move purposefully through the water, with the helm in hand and a course chosen, while remaining ready for the wind, the waves, and the conditions that will inevitably change.
The sea cannot be controlled.
It can only be read, respected, and navigated.
Life is much the same.
We cannot choose every condition we encounter, but we can learn to notice where we are, choose where we want to go, and adjust when conditions change.
Make Way is the philosophy behind Wind & Within—a way of thinking about change, uncertainty, balance, choice, trust, and direction through the language of sailing.
The Book
Make Way — Tide I: Presence is a Navigator’s handbook for life, using the principles and language of sailing to explore how we navigate change, uncertainty, choice, and direction.
Written by Philippe D’Astous, it brings these ideas to life through stories, reflections, and practical exercises drawn from the sea.
It is not a manual for finding all the answers. It is another way of looking at the questions we encounter along the way.
Every Wind & Within booking includes a complimentary digital PDF and hardcover copy of Make Way — Tide I: Presence.
From Philosophy to Practice
Make Way provides the ideas.
The sea provides the setting.
The voyage brings them to life.
The Five Tides form a progressive journey inspired by Make Way, bringing its ideas into lived experiences through activities, reflection, conversation, and practical tools to carry into everyday life.
Why The Sea?
The ocean has a unique way of slowing us down.
Away from everyday distractions, perspectives shift. Sailing asks us to pay attention, adapt to changing conditions, and trust what we cannot control.
These lessons extend far beyond life on the water.
The sea doesn’t give us answers.
It creates the space to discover them.
The Journey Begins with a First Tide
Tide I — Presence is where the Wind & Within journey begins.
Before choosing a course, there is a moment to arrive, pay attention, and understand where you are.
The first Tide is about learning to arrive.
